Topic:
Digits, numbers and quantities
This wooden Montessori sorter is designed for calm, meaningful play - exactly the kind that works well in busy everyday life. The child strings the elements on pegs of different heights and thus naturally understands the relationship between number and quantity, practices counting and begins to compare more - less.
In the spirit of Montessori materials, the toy supports self-correction: the child only sees whether he has placed the right number of elements and corrects himself. This is a gentle way to build internal order, without pressure and without “correcting” by the adult.
How to play
- The child chooses a number and places the corresponding number of elements on the peg.
- Sorts by color and makes rows/patterns (e.g. red–yellow–red–yellow).
- Plays “more–less“: compares two pegs and names which one has more elements.
- For advanced: counting backwards or ordering from 0 to 10 and back.
What it actually develops
- early mathematics – numbers, quantities, counting, comparison
- independence – the child works alone and completes the task
- Montessori self-control – checks and corrects without external assessment
- fine motor skills – grasping, placing, precision
- concentration – sustaining attention in short, clear steps
- learning skills – order, sequence, completing a task
Educational focus and application
- Mathematics – counting to 10, quantity, comparing more–less
- Montessori methodology – work with material, self-correction, repetition until confidence
