On May 24, Bulgaria puts on its most beautiful attire, that of knowledge. The streets are filled with the smiles of students, the pride of teachers and the festive sound of the anthem “Forward, Reborn People“. This is not just another day off, but the day when we honor our most precious heritage: our alphabet.

From the Glagolitic script to the modern computer font

Created in the 9th century, the Bulgarian alphabet has come a long and worthy way, from the complex and mystical signs of the Glagolitic script to the harmonious and clear Cyrillic script. Over the centuries, it has changed its appearance, simplified its forms and developed together with our people, but it has never lost its power.
The Cyrillic script is our “home“. It is the graphic expression of the Bulgarian soul. Thanks to these 30 letters, we have preserved our traditions, passed down the stories of our ancestors, and kept the memory of our heroes alive.

Language as memory and identity

We often say that language is a means of communication. But it is much more. Language is:

• Our memory: The wisdom and experience of generations are encoded in it.
• Our history: Every word bears the mark of the time it has passed through.
• Our identity: It is what makes us Bulgarians, no matter where in the world we are.
