What is CMR?

CMR (Convention relative au contrat de transport international de marchandises par route) is an international convention used to regulate the international carriage of goods by road. This is an important document that every participant in transport activity should know what it means. It certifies the terms of the contract of carriage and the bearing of responsibility between the consignor, the carrier and the consignee of the cargo.

Preparation and content of the CMR bill of lading

  1. Mandatory data – the CMR bill of lading must include complete information about the consignor, the carrier, the consignee, as well as a detailed description of the product.
  2. Responsibilities of the carrier - specifies the rights and obligations of the carrier regarding the security and integrity of the goods during transport.
  3. Preparation guidelines – anyone preparing a PMR must follow a set of guidelines for completing all fields in the document to ensure its legality and validity.

How is the CMR completed?

When filling out the cmr document, it is important to include comprehensive information about the cargo and the conditions of transport. Every single aspect, such as the type of goods, weight, number of packages and final destination, must be described in detail. This also includes details of the sender and recipient as well as the carrier.

  1. Accuracy and attention to detail. All data must be plotted with high accuracy. It is important to check the correctness of every detail, such as the correct naming of goods, the correspondence of addresses and telephone numbers.
  2. Avoiding mistakes. Guidelines for avoiding filling errors include:
  • checking for spelling errors that could lead to misunderstandings or delays;
  • double-checking numbers, especially when it comes to weight, counts and measurements;
  • ensure that all fields are filled in. Incomplete fields may result in legal disputes or shipping delays.

       3. Additional instructions. It is also important to follow any additional instructions related to the particular transport or the requirements of the countries through which the cargo will pass. This may include special markings for hazardous materials or additional customs clearance documents.
