Certain printed or written documents and written materials must be archived and stored for a long time due to various legal regulations, such as in libraries, archives, government institutions or other secure work environments.
For example, in archives, not only is the use of paper with special qualities required, but also the use of light-resistant, abrasion-resistant and water-resistant writing materials in accordance with ISO 11798. This can be permanent ink, pencils or archival pens.

The ISO 11798 standard specifies various requirements in relation to the long-term readability of documents. Paper and ink are tested for their resistance to aging including:

  • optical density in the original state and after processing according to DIN 4512-9; 1993-1;
  • appearance;
  • light fastness according to DIN EN ISO 4892-2:2021-11;
  • water resistance;
  • wear resistance;
  • heat resistance;
  • influence of pressure on the mechanical strength of paper according to DIN EN ISO 1924-2:2009-05 and ISO 5626:1993-11.

The tests differ from ISO 27668-2 in that they have significantly more stringent and detailed requirements.

In some countries, this standard is mandatory in order to ensure the long-term storage of important documents.

With this permanent ink are the Pentel BLP77 Rollerballs and the Pentel LRP7 Refill.
